Bar Guide 2015: The Standard

14 NE 22nd Ave., 233-4181. 3 pm-2:30 am daily.

I have no objectivity about the Standard, which doubles as my living room for every major sports contest and my no-nonsense dining room whenever I'd rather not cook at 10 pm. (Order from the whiteboard, not the chalkboard, and it's like getting a hot plate from your neighbor, and just as endearing.) But I will still assert that my regular bar is better than your regular bar, not because it is stylish, or offers a mean Vieux Carre, or has a discriminating local cocktail list. Because, fuck it, they don't. But the Standard is pure of heart, from its owner through its bar staff through the longtime patrons who took up a collection to buy a scooter for the bar's retiring cook and bartender, Annelies. Not to mention they've got a bewilderingly good tap selection—Engelberg Pils, Buoy IPA, common guests from Barley Brown's—for a bar that serves craft pints for $2 on Sundays.

Happy Hour: 3-6 pm daily. $1 off wells and draft specials. Daily drink specials (including $2 crafts Sunday, $1 Hamm's pints Wednesday).

Entertainment: Big Buck, shuffleboard, Flintstones vending machine, photo booth, Sopranos and Walking Dead pinball, patio.
