Phew! We had some technical issues there, but here it is: The complete list of Best New Band voters' ballots. I've also included, at the end of this post, an alphabetical list of every band that received votes in this year's poll. While celebrating the Top 10 groups (and, at a free Missississippi Studios show this Friday, three of the top four) is great, that list is what this poll is really about. I guarantee you that, among the 350+ groups listed there, some of them have the potential to be your new favorites. Unless you just hate music. Then you're in trouble.---
The following is split into three parts: The Letter, which explains our point system and other rules; The Ballots, which are pretty self-explanatory and The List, which is all the vote-getters in alphabetical order (hopefully they're all spelled right, because no copy editor is doing that job...).
Two final notes:
1. If you believe you should be on this voting list, please email me at cjarman [at] wweek [dot] com and let me know why. If you fit our criteria, we'll make sure to get you a ballot next year.
2. I'd like to say a special thanks to Michael Mannheimer, who left WW for the big city last week. He was a stellar assistant editor and this annual pollâalong with the paper you see on newsstands every weekâcould not have come out without him these past few years. We're gonna miss him.
Without further ado, here's all the wonky details of the 2011 Best New Band poll. Thank you for caring.
---
THE LETTER (with a complete list of past winners)
Dear Esteemed Member of the Portland Music Community,
Congratulations! You have been selected by our diligent team of local music scientists to take part in Willamette Week's Best New Band Poll 2011, where the Portland music community looks back over the last year and crowns one group, solo artist or DJ the greatest new talent in town.
As you may remember, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside took last year's poll in a tight race with Typhoon and Deelay Ceelay. We had a rad show at Berbati's Pan and it totally ruled (this year's show will be at Mississippi Studios).
So, here's what we need from you (please read all this crap carefully):
Email us (bestnewband@wweek.com) a list of the top 5 Portland-based acts you've discovered this year. Again, you can vote for any music-making entity, be it a band, solo performer, DJ or an MC. You can rank them one through five, or give no rankings if you want to spread your points equally. If you can't think of five new acts that have made an impact on you in the last year, then just send us however many you like, whether it's four, three, two or just one. "New," obviously, is relative (just like "band" and even "best"). Don't stress out on the wording too much. But DO stress on getting us this email by Monday, April 4.
When all the ballots have been collected, we will assign points for each band you voted for based on how you ranked them (No. 1 = 5 pts., No. 2 = 4 pts., No. 3 = 3 pts., etc.). If you don't rank your votes by numbering each band, the points will be divided and distributed equally among your selections. We will then add up the points from all the ballots and come up with a top 10, which will be published in an upcoming issue of Willamette Week along with profiles and photos and other such fanfare. The number one band will appear on the cover of the paper and, if available, will headline WW's Best New Band showcase.
You can vote for any band you like, as long as it is not a band you play in (you can vote for bands you work with-as long as you're voting as a TRUE FAN and not just a profiteer).
DO NOT VOTE FOR THESE PAST WINNERS (as much as we like them all):

Ok, you have your instructions!
*Please email your top 5 list to bestnewband@wweek.com (or hit "reply" on this email!) by Monday, April 4, 2011. We also need your full name and your role in the music community. This is so important I'm going to use caps and bold it: IF YOU DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME AND TITLE IN YOUR REPLY EMAIL, YOUR VOTES WILL NOT BE COUNTED. Your votes will be published online, but if you would like your votes to remain anonymous, we can do that. Just let us know in your email.
(Fine print: If you received this email at more than one email address, please only respond once, with one set of votes; If this ballot arrived at a general email address for a record store, recording studio, bar, etc., please do not respond with more than two ballots from two separate employees who identify themselves as such; artists that have placed in the BNB Poll in the past get one vote per band--in the event that more than one ballot is returned from an artist/group or more than two from an invited organization, we will count the earliest ballot(s) to arrive in our inbox and disqualify subsequent ballots from said group/organization (this is meant to avoid ballot-stuffing). If you have questions about this, you can email Casey at cjarman@wweek.com)
Thanks so much! We get really excited at the chance to put local music on the cover of our paper each year, and we discover a lot of new music thanks to your votes. Thanks for all you do, all year-round.
love and hugs,
Casey Jarman and Michael Mannheimer

Dang. This one is really hard this year. There were so many excellent bands started, and a lot that I feel will pick up more steam as they evolve this summer. I wish the list could be a little longer this year. Dangerous Boys Club, Psychic Feline, The Greys, ASSS, Love Always, The Crow, STLS, Astrology, and the list could go on and on. Holcombe Waller â Supernaturally gifted in voice, vision and versatility, Waller is Portlandâs official Power Spirit Guide.
Chervona â I cast my vote AGAIN for this revolutionary Post Punk Peasant Party Troupe! These ultimate party starters number fans like GoGo Bordello, Manu Chao and sweaty hordes of ecstatic Portland dancers.
James Faretheewell â âThe Poet Laureate of BizzarroVilleâ finally emerges behind his self-titled album, to reveal the glorious gitchy genius of his Psychedelic-Americana-Gypsy-Rock.
Billy D â Mr D moved here a year ago and was soon booked on the big stage at the Safeway Blues Festival AND won âBest New Actâ from The Cascade Blues Society! Bluesy guitar slinging, rootsy song spinning, and seasoned well from living large in Chicago, LA and Santa Fe â now heâs ourâs to cherish!
Brownish Black â And finally AN ACTUAL newly formed ensembleâ¦.Think: Detroit Dap King meetsPortland Soul Sista â with an itchy new sound, this ensemble is soon to capture Portlandâs neo soul flag.

It's a good time to live here.
many thanks for all you guys do,
