State Tells Restaurant Workers No Gloves Required

The gloves are off, and they can stay that way.

The Oregon Health Authority says that new code requiring food handlers to wear gloves while touching food isn't going to be enacted after all. The requirement was supposed to go into effect July 1.

Restaurant owners fought the requirement because of cost and creating too much plastic waste. They also argued that mandating glove use would discourage hand washing and create false sense of security about protecting human health because workers would wash their hands less often. State health officials had made the opposite argument.
