Mayor-elect Charlie Hales has made his second key hire.
Hales, who takes office in January, has hired Dana Haynes to be his spokesman. Haynes was a reporter and editor for 20 years at various Oregon newspapers, including The Oregonian and, most recently, the Salem Statesman Journal, where he covered the state legislature.
He joins Gail Shibley, whom Hales named chief of staff earlier this month.
Haynes served as director of communications for Portland Community College from 2007 through 2011. Haynes, who wrote five novels while working full-time in journalism and as a spokesman, left PCC in 2011 to write fiction full-time after receiving a two-book contract from St. Martin's Press, on the strength of his fifth book, Breaking Point, a thriller featuring plane-crash investigators.
His sixth novel, Ice Cold Kill, will be published in March and he's nearly finished his seventh.
"It was a blast to be able to write fiction full-time," Haynes says. "But I'm looking forward to working for Charlie."
