The Oregonian's top editor, Peter Bhatia, isn't headed to Nebraska after all.
WW reported in December that Bhatia was named one of five finalists for dean of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
But last week, the Nebraska journalism school announced its selection of Maria Marron from Central Michigan University.
Bhatia's vying for the Nebraska job was unexpected, since it's only been nine months since he received the new title of vice president of content for Oregonian Media Group, a new company overseeing The Oregonian's move to web-based reporting.
Bhatia handled most of the newsroom layoffs as the paper reduced home-delivery days and staff in June.
In December, Bhatia told staffers in an email that he was considering the Nebraska job. "This place and our work here mean so much to me," he wrote. "We have much more to do."
Bhatia has not replied to WW's email asking whether he plans to remain at The Oregonian or look for another job opening.
