Karl "Rick" Miller, the founder of Avamere Health Services, announced this morning he will not seek a state Senate seat after all.
As WW first reported, Miller spent money polling to see whether trying to unseat longtime state Sen. Richard Devlin (D-Tualatin) was a viable option. Those expenditures required that Miller file a candidate committee but that filing did not actually mean he'd challenge Devlin, who as the co-chair of the Joint Ways and Means Committee is Salem's top budget expert.
Miller said in a statement this morning that his wife, Erika, had suffered a small stroke in December that he wanted to focus on helping her recover.
"The stress of a political campaign is not in her, or our family's best interest at this time. Standing by her is my highest priority right now. I remain interested in public service and will continue to seek out ways to be active on issues important to me, both locally and statewide," Miller said in a statement.
"There are some good people on both sides of the political spectrum, and from both labor and industry, working to make Oregon a better place to live, raise families, educate our children, and to start and grow businesses. I will continue to work with and support those who are solution-oriented, as well as continue to support organizations committed to positive change."
