A Portland woman protests the shooting death of Ferguson, Mo. teenager Michael Brown

A crowd estimated as large as 3,000 people marched through the streets of Portland on Tuesday night, protesting the death of teenager Michael Brown and the decision of a Missouri grand jury to not indict the police officer who shot him.

The crowd gathered in front of the Justice Center on SW 3rd Avenue, listening to speakers from the Albina Ministerial Alliance and activist groups, before marching through Portland's downtown streets in a display that snarled traffic across the central city.

Protesters carried signs and chanted: "Hands up! Don't shoot!"

When the march returned to the Justice Center, a minute of silence was held for Michael Brown. The blades of a TV news helicopter hummed overhead.

After the initial protest and march, an second protest led by younger activists headed back out in the streets to further display their anger and frustration. This group led riot police onto the on-ramp of I-84, where police deployed pepper spray and arrested seven people.

WW correspondents took photos throughout the night. The first three photos in this slide show are by Christopher Onstott; the rest were taken by Miller Resor.
