The board of Portland Community College is unhappy with the college's president, Jeremy Brown, and is in the process of negotiating a severance package with him, WW has learned.


If Brown and the board can't reach a settlement in private discussions, the board could vote to fire Brown in a public meeting.

Discord at PCC emerged last week when WW reported that Brown had applied to be chancellor at Mid-South Community College in West Memphis, Ark., according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Brown joined PCC in July 2013, replacing longtime president Preston Pulliams. 

The board announced Brown's hiring in April 2013. Just one month earlier, the State University of New York College of Technology at Canton had announced Brown's appointment as acting president. The SUNY job was to have paid Brown $185,000, according to press reports.

At PCC, Brown's salary and allowances totaled $267,000 his first year, OPB reported in 2013.

Brown served as president of Dowling College on Long Island from 2011 to 2013, when he was ousted by that college's board, according to Newsday.
