Polaris Dance Company Finds a New Home

Portland's dancers are slowly getting their legs back under them after Northwest Dance Project was forced off North Mississippi Avenue, Conduit Dance got kicked out of its shared downtown space and Polaris Dance relinquished its small studio near Artists Repertory Theatre to redevelopment in March.

Polaris announced in a June 1 press release that it will move into a new, 6,000 square-foot home at 1826 NW 18th Avenue, between Thurman and Upshur streets, by the end of this year.

"We will be leaving our location at 1501 SW Taylor, which we've called home for the previous 6 years. The decision to demolish the building and re-build condominiums has provided us the opportunity to look for a larger, more accommodating space," spokeswoman Mary Overman wrote.

The homeless dance studios have struggled to find the open, industrial spaces they need since Portland's burgeoning weed industry needs exactly the same type of spaces.

Artistic Director Robert Guitron is helping to design the remodel, which will include four studios (one will double as a 100-seat theater).
