Stop me if you've heard this one before: The Alhambra Theatre is closing. Again.
According to a post on the venue's Facebook page, the current occupants of the century-old music venue at the corner of Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard and 49th Avenue "have been unable to come to mutually agreeable terms in regards to our lease." The doors close at the end of June, and all shows scheduled beyond that point will be moved elsewhere.
The theater, which has been a cinema and a burlesque club in its lifetime, has led a tumultuous existence, particularly in the last decade. In 2007, the venue, then known as Mt. Tabor Legacy, became the subject of a family feud between its co-owners. In 2011, a dispute between management and landlord Phil Ragaway once again forced a change in ownership.
Three years ago, Charles Varga and his daughter, Chase, took over the space, readopting its original name and broadening the booking. The club became the staging area for the Bridgetown Comedy Festival and one of the few small venues in town to regularly book hip-hop—though those shows weren't always without incident.
Here is the full statement on the venue's closure:
We'll update this post when we know more.
