Quick little PSA: There’s a lot of classic PDX holiday events going on throughout December—many of which we’ve already featured, and we like to avoid repetition. But, ICYMI, all current event listings can be found online at wweek.com. OK, PSA over, now let’s Get Busy!
GO: Portland Winterhawks
If the icy air outside just isn’t quite doing it for you…try a Portland Winterhawks game. There you’ll experience even icier air, but this time indoors, whilst Portland’s junior ice hockey team skates in front of you. In all seriousness, Portland Winterhawks games are the perfect winter activity—the tickets are pretty cheap, there’s food, there’s beer, you get to doll up in cute-’n’-cozy winter accessories…oh yeah, and we’re pretty good. Like, three-time Western Hockey League champs good. Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 300 N Ramsay Way, 503-236-4295, chl.ca/whl-winterhawks. Various times and dates through Friday, March 21. Prices vary.
WATCH: Wicked at OMSI
Idk if you guys knew that this was happening, but we’ve really been holding space for “Defying Gravity”...sorry, Cynthia Erivo, we had to. Despite some admittedly meme-worthy moments on the film’s press tour, Wicked’s cinematic debut was honestly incredible—especially when you consider that Ariana Grande and Erivo are singing live (i.e., it’s not dubbed over, which is very cool). If a Wicked screening was not already included in your Thanksgiving weekend itinerary—or even if it was and you just need to witness it all over again—you can catch the film tonight and tomorrow night at OMSI for less than $10. OMSI, 1945 SE Water Ave., 503-797-4000, omsi.edu. 6 pm Wednesday–Thursday, Dec. 11–12. $7–$9.
WATCH: Fungi Film Fest
Maybe Wicked’s not really your thing. If so, may we suggest…a film festival devoted entirely to fungus? The Fungi Film Fest, or FF)—the world’s only film festival dedicated to mushrooms and molds—is back for its fourth year running in Portland. And if FFF is anything like its trailer—a trippily cinematic experience in itself—we can’t even imagine what the full, fungus-filled festival experience will entail. Well, we do know that there’ll be: 20 films from nine different countries, including a drama about a felted fungi sisterhood who dream of finding freedom from “The Beast.” Cinema 21, 616 NW 21st Ave., 503-223-4515, fungifilmfest.com. 7 pm Thursday, 3:30 pm Sunday, Dec. 12 and 15. $15.
GO: Crafty Wonderland Holiday Art + Craft Market
Crafty Wonderland, the city’s largest arts and crafts market, is back, just in time for gift-giving season. This year’s holiday market boasts unique handmade wares—we’re talking ceramic penguins, bow ties for cats, tote bags made from album covers, plant-based skin care products, funky seaglass earrings and rings, and literally so much more—from upwards of 275 different local vendors. Tix for Saturday and Sunday are just $4, but if you’re willing to spend a little extra ($25), you’ll get access to Friday’s “Crafty Wonderland First Pick Pre-Show Party,” where you shop before the show opens to the public. Oregon Convention Center, 777 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, craftywonderland.com. 5–9 pm Friday, 10 am–5 pm Saturday–Sunday, Dec. 13–15. $4–$25.
LISTEN: Portland Gay Men’s Chorus: Merry Everything
The Portland Gay Men’s Chorus wishes you a Merry…well, Everything! No matter what you celebrate—whether this time of year puts you in the holiday spirit, or in desperate need of a SAD lamp—Merry Everything is here to spread peace, hope and joy through performances of winter music from around the world. Plus, the PGMC will also host a collection drive for non-perishable food items for the Hand Up Project, which supports BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities impacted by food insecurity. Newmark Theatre, 1111 SW Broadway, 503-248-4335, pdxgmc.org. 8 pm Friday–Saturday, 3 pm Sunday, Dec. 13–15. $26.25–$69.95.
WATCH: Elf Dress-Up Night
This Saturday, don your best elf garb, enjoy some candy-covered noodles, pass through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops, walk through the Lincoln Tunnel, and then head on down to the Tomorrow Theater for a screening of everyone’s favorite Christmas movie: Yep, you guessed it, Elf! Well, perhaps it’s not everyone’s favorite Christmas movie—although, if you’re voluntarily choosing to eat pasta with syrup…it’s probably yours. Tomorrow Theater, 3530 SE Division St., 503-221-1156, tomorrowtheater.org. 7 pm Saturday, Dec. 14. $15.
GO: Triskelee Farm Holiday Market
We have received word that Santa (the real, Buddy the Elf-certified, non-beef-and-cheese-smelling, Santa) will be at Triskelee Farm this Saturday. Why? Well, apparently Santa really enjoys sitting by the fire with a burger and a drink (who doesn’t), jumping around in bounce houses, and supporting small businesses—all of which he can do at the Triskelee Farm Holiday Market. Santa and his farm animal helpers will also be taking photos with anyone and everyone in need of some holiday cheer. Triskelee Farm, 29700 SW Mountain Road, 503-741-9930, triskeleefarm.com. 10 am–3 pm Saturday, Dec. 14. Free.
