A Special Plea from Give!Guide’s Founder

The situation is dire, and Portland’s nonprofits need our help more than ever.

Dear Reader,

We founded Give!Guide 21 years ago to build the giving habit in younger Portlanders and to support our incredible nonprofit community. Together, we raise millions each year — more, in fact, than the New York Times Communities Fund does annually (we raised $8.35 million to the fund’s “almost $8 million” last year). That remarkable achievement is thanks to you.

But this year feels different. Giving is down everywhere both by individuals and corporations, and now a report from Oregon Public Broadcasting brings it home: “Nonprofit organizations across Portland are facing serious financial and staffing challenges that imperil groups working in everything....Some are on the brink of shutting down entirely.”

The situation is dire, and Portland’s nonprofits need our help more than ever. Because of this, we must sound the alarm.

Here’s our plea: If you haven’t given yet, please go to Give!Guide today and give to the nonprofits of your choice working on causes you care about. If you’ve already given, consider doing so again — and take advantage of upcoming Big Give Days, our donor goodies, or incentives from the nonprofits themselves. You can also engage your family: give on someone’s behalf, or let your kids choose where a donation goes.

Thousands of us working together through Give!Guide can make things better for these organizations when they need it most. It is no exaggeration when we say your gift makes a difference in our community. Give knowing that each nonprofit has been vetted through the IRS, the Oregon Secretary of State, and the Oregon Department of Justice.

Just two weeks remain until the curtain falls at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Please, let your credit or debit card run a little freer than usual.

Thank you for showing up for Portland, year in and year out.
