After making some of the starkest and most confessional music in the indie-rock canon, Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, leaned into gritty soul on 2006’s The Greatest, with help from pros who’d played with the likes of Al Green. To celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary, she’s released a new EP featuring a cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U”—a song Sinead O’Connor would seem to have the last word on, but as Marshall’s recent body of Bob Dylan interpretations makes clear, no one can make an old song new like her. Those who only know George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic as the diaper-rocking crew behind “Give Up the Funk” and “Flashlight” might be surprised on a deeper dive to discover one of the most provocative, challenging and intellectually rewarding catalogs of the rock era. Music historian Marcus J. Moore is the perfect person to lead such a journey into the band’s discography, hosting guided listening sessions on the first three Funkadelic albums—their 1970 self-titled, Free Your Mind…and Your Ass Will Follow from later the same year, and 1971’s Maggot Brain, the primus inter pares of the trilogy. Greg Mendez spent years as a low-key Bandcamp genius before finally getting his due on his 2023 self-titled album. Most received it as his debut, despite it being the product of years in the trenches of Philadelphia’s improbably fertile DIY scene. Mendez’s new album, Beauty LandI, is even better, approaching the gold standard for spidery, Beatles-inflected folk pop set by Portland’s favorite son Elliott Smith.
