Darin Campbell Drops Out of State House Race

Campbell faced questions about his convictions for theft and public indecency.

Darin Campbell is dropping his bid for a state legislative seat representing portions of Southwest Portland and east Washington County.

Campbell announced his withdrawal from the House District 27 Democratic primary last night, citing family medical issues and lending his endorsement to public health nurse Sheri Malstrom.

Campbell, 45, is the son of former state Rep. Larry Campbell (R-Eugene), a prominent figure in Oregon's Republican politics. Darin Campbell has worked as a lobbyist for his father's firm—representing clients including Radio Cab, where he has also worked as a taxi driver.

Campbell's candidacy was hampered early by revelations about his checkered past.

In January, WW reported that Campbell's criminal record included two felony theft convictions and three convictions for public indecency. The most recent indecency conviction, for public masturbation at Portland State University in 1999, occurred when he was 29 years old.

On Wednesday, Campbell said he would run for office again.

"Politics is in my blood," he wrote on Facebook, "and I know with my experience both in life as well as the legislative process I can and will be an effective legislator. I want to thank all the support I have received through the last 8 months. This has been a learning experience that I will benefit from in the next election with my name on the ballot."
