With Hanukkah and Kwanzaa just about wrapped, the holidays are finally over. Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme’s nondenominational Christmas show is a safe space to let it all hang out as the Pacific Northwest drag superstars give voice to just about every wintry gripe one has this time of year. At the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Sunday, Dec. 29, the RuPaul’s Drag Race alumnae celebrated their seventh irreverent Yuletide special—the 2020 one on Hulu is a prime example of the lunacy to expect each year—with the finesse of professionals and the fun, goofy energy of theater besties goofing off on the last show of the season (Orlando gets that honor later this week).
Monsoon and DeLa get meta throughout their holiday special, which sees them skewer The Nutcracker as well as songs by Chappell Roan, Beyoncé and Jefferson Airplane, among others. Sporting minimal set design, Monsoon, DeLa and their expert troupe of backup dancers delivered a show that was fearlessly stupid. The top-tier cabaret artists were free to showcase their ranges and break through to profound moments. How many times, DeLa asks, must we call December “unseasonably warm” before it stops being unseasonable? The real-life best friends also shared how to carry on through difficult times, despite already surviving so many in a row: turn to each other and keep going. With a fresh show each year, The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show is charming enough to be a new year-end limbo season tradition.
