I know I'm not the only PDX resident who's originally from the Midwest (or another region where most folks drink crappy domestic beer), so let me say this:
(719 SE Morrison St., 236-7080) is just like those bars you used to go to in order to drink good (meaning European) beer. And its mostly bottled-beer list—which is heavy on the Belgian brews, including three varieties of Chimay and lambics from
(raspberry) and
(peach) to
(cherry)—seems endless. It's also worth noting that this is
a theme bar. Aside from its exact-replica namesake, two subtle photos of Jim Morrison behind the bar and a cocktail named "Doors"—a mix of Chambord, sparkling wine, pineapple and amaretto—the Hotel, opened by Blue Monk co-owner Chris Joseph, is far more classy with its redwood bar and monochrome green decor than it is psychedelic. So grab a sour-apple Jolly Rancher from the snack tray (the green theme is far-reaching), order up a few scrape-the-plate apps—the baked goat cheese with spicy tomato sauce is simple yet delish—and fall in love. AMY MCCULLOUGH.
