Byways Cafe

The long weekend wait (on the sidewalk, without coffee) will test your endurance, but travel-themed Byways Cafe feels like a vacation once you're inside. The host and servers are delightful, and the breakfast items and counter-displayed baked goods, from apple strudel to giant, near-cakelike cookies, follow suit. Among the house specials, the Mount Rushmore Hash ($7.95)—a spicy mix of cheese-draped taters, chunky corned beef and bell peppers—stands out. The blue corn pancakes ($9.25 for a full stack) are a perfectly grainy foil for their toppers: honey pecan butter (with actual chunks of pecan) and rich maple syrup. Talk about a getaway! (AGM)
