Q&A with Starfucker's Josh Hodges

josh hodges
poses some questions
did Starfucker just sell out?
WW: I ran into Ryan [Dobrowski (Blind Pilot, ex-Sexton Blake)] the other night at the Junkface show, and he mentioned the name change thing to me. That it was kinda on the table as something that was going to happen. But I didn't realize, and it sounds like you didn't realize either, that it was gonna happen, well, today?
What did, what did, you guys, how long have you been talking about that as an idea?
Since the beginning?

It's kinda crazy that people will care that much in 2009 about that stuff. But—
Right.
Let's see, I'm gonna bug you about that a little bit more, but um, when you first named the band, what was, what was the situation that you named it in?
Oh yeah, I remember that.
The band's changed a lot obviously since, you know, since I was going to see you in basements back in the beginning. Do you feel like, the name, regardless of all the touring stuff, is it still something you would've considered changing? Is it a different animal now?
Right.
So, okay, if I'm gonna bust your balls a little bit on it, isn't that in some way against, you know, the ideal that the band started on?
Yeah.
Yeah and here you are now with a career.
Who'd have thought?
So, so when you talked about the decision, you talked about it mostly because of the touring thing?
Wow.
So there is a change though that happened, with, with you, right? I mean it seems like you've come around to being okay with some stuff that maybe you weren't. It seems like you're more comfortable with the idea of letting it be marketed—is that a fair question?
Yeah you know you're gonna get people calling you a sell-out.
You're gonna get that word.
isn't work
not fucking work
Well and no one's asking you to do anything different musically, right?
The name change is one thing as long as you get to keep doing...
So you're already comfortable with the name change?
Yeah that's awesome.
Are you still having as much fun with it as you did when you started out?
Cause I remembered, when I talked to you for the best new bands issue two years ago—
I remember telling you that I thought that you could probably walk away from this project, if at some point you got bored.
I remember saying that I thought you were one of the few people that could, even after having it be successful, say I don't want to do this anymore.
Do you still feel that way about it, like if it does get to be a chore, that you would just—
Are you still trying to fit in some house shows, like on tour, and when you're here, are you still ...?
It seems like no matter how big the band gets you'll always have to play those.
I heard that was a good show!
I remember going to that Green House show, that was the last time I saw you guys in a house and I couldn't even get into the basement to see you.
It sounds like it's happening, it's on the MySpace. Was it shawn that posted it on the MySpace?
I it important to you that it, that the ball keeps rolling, that it gets bigger? I mean is that something you want to see happen? Is that something you think about at this point?
So you can come home and play basement shows?
Doesn't seem like a bad situation...
I can think of a few Portland bands who have kinda gotten into that situation.
But you'd have to do more than change your band's name to piss off Portlanders enough to not go to your shows anymore.
I think you'll, you'll get some flack for sure
But so, what is your response to someone who says "Fuck you Josh, you sold out," is, is what?
Well if you, if you hit the big time, that's your mission, right? To come back and pull some strings?
Yeah, that's awesome.
