U.S. Rep. David Wu (D-Ore.) marks his 56th birthday on April 8, but he's hosting a birthday party in Portland on March 23, about a week before a key Federal Election Commission fundraising report is due.
The $100-a-head event is being held Wednesday, March 23, at Seres Restaurant in the Pearl while Congress is in recess next week.
For Democrats to view Wu as competitive in 2012, the seven-term congressman needs to raise about $250,000 before the March 31 FEC deadline.
That could prove difficult, if the words of House leaders are any indication of Wu's current status among Democrats. This morning, Politico reported House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer offered tepid words of support for Wu.
