The city's largest business group, the Portland Business Alliance, has endorsed Eileen Brady to replace Mayor Sam Adams.
J. Isaac, the chair of the PBA board of directors, said in a Tuesday press release that Brady supports the alliance's jobs agenda and improving the economy by creating private-sector jobs.
"Eileen Brady will bring a fresh perspective as well as a business
perspective to City Hall," Isaac said in a statement. "Throughout this process, we asked candidates about their
views on private-sector job retention and creation, and Eileen has
demonstrated to us that she supports our jobs agenda and is committed to
improving our economy."
Brady, 50, a businesswoman and former nonprofit executive. Her support for the Columbia River Crossing, the proposed $3.5 billion freeway project between Portland and Vancouver, may have been key to her success.
The PBA had made the bridge project a key issue in its mayoral endorsements. Brady has come out for the project after saying earlier in the campaign she didn't think the project could move forward as proposed.
Her stance is markedly different than the other major candidates in the race. State Rep. Jefferson Smith, founder of the Bus Project, opposes the Columbia River Crossing, and former city commissioner Charlie Hales doesn't think it can get funded the way it's been planned.
The board also endorsed Rod Underhill for Multnomah County District Attorney.
