XRAY.FM Starts Citywide Broadcast on Monday

Tune to 107.1 FM to hear Carl Wolfson all across Portland.

If you happened to scan through your car's FM radio dial this morning, you heard a familiar voice: Carl Wolfson is back on the air in downtown Portland.

Nonprofit radio startup XRAY.FM officially begins broadcasting on a second signal this Monday, Sept. 22, quadrupling its reach across the city. But clever listeners, including you, can hear the station sooner: XRAY began testing the 90-watt translator today.

The rock-and-talk station, which returns progressive pundits Wolfson and Thom Hartmann to the Portland airwaves, will be heard on both 91.1 FM and a more powerful signal, 107.1 FM.

The expansion marks the end of another local, independent music station, KZME, which used to broadcast at 107.1 FM until folding this summer. The KZME board voted last month to hand the signal over to XRAY.FM.

The new station marks a second act for several left-wing figures, including Oregon Rep. Jefferson Smith—now the station's executive director—and Wolfson, who lost his morning talk show in 2012 when Clear Channel turned KPOJ AM 620 into a sports station.

Wolfson's new show airs 7-9 am. He indicates to WW that he's pleased.

"For my reaction to our fantastic, new signal, please check Monica Wehby's website," Wolfson says. "I'm sure it will be plagiarized and reported there."
