After 19,000 miles and nearly five months on the road, the cast and crew of Darius Goes West joined about 65 people at the Hollywood Theatre on Saturday for one of two special screenings in Portland of the film.
This impressive group of a dozen young men — including the documentary's title character, now-19-year-old Darius Weems — has high ambitions. They want to raise $17 million in one year, selling DVD's, T-shirts, and sweatshirts, with much of the money raised going toward research in curing Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the disease afflicting Weems.
(One crew member said during a Q & A session after the screening that they're only just above 2 percent toward their goal of DVD sales)
Also attending the screening was David Boyle, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Oregon-based AVI BioPharma. Boyle announced the first DMD patient was treated last week with AVI-4658, a drug that shows promise in treating one-third of those affected with DMD.
