The large restaurant space at Southeast 34th Avenue and Morrison Street has had a sad history since Sweetwater's Jam House closed six years ago. The the Eastside Salvador Molly's moved in in 2003 and closed in 2007. Then came Calypso, which offered more or less the same menu as Salvador Molly's and closed after less than eight months, transforming overnight into Edge of Belmont. The latter was a pub/casual hangout spot that was so terrible on my one visit that I refused to return to finish a review. I waited 45 minutes to get the attention of the waitress—there were maybe a dozen other customers—and was served a bland sausage on a mushy hoagie with a side of freezer fries. My bill: $11. Edge of Belmont closed a scant seven months after opening.
Now the space may finally get a worthy tenant. Hobnob Grille, an "independently owned, neighborhood-friendly restaurant and bar specializing in modern American food with a local/seasonal menu at affordable prices" is set to open late this month. Given the involvement of Big Idea Group, the restaurant design and consulting firm that worked on Del Inti, Tear Drop Lounge and A Cena, among others, I have high hopes. A good dinner joint is sorely needed in the neighborhood since Kinta closed.
